Discover Ramen-San Deluxe

Walking into Ramen-San Deluxe for the first time, I remember the hum of Michigan Avenue traffic fading behind me as soon as the door closed. The space felt lively without being chaotic, and within minutes I understood why this spot at 165 E Huron St, Chicago, IL 60611, United States keeps popping up in conversations about good ramen downtown. I’ve eaten a lot of noodles over the years, from late-night bowls on the West Coast to quick lunches in Tokyo-style shops, and this place immediately felt like it knew what it was doing.

The menu leans into Japanese comfort food while still feeling playful. There are classic ramen bowls built on slow-simmered broths, along with creative options that bring in unexpected toppings and textures. On my last visit, I watched the open kitchen prep tonkotsu broth that had clearly been cooking for hours, which matches what many chefs recommend for depth and mouthfeel. Culinary research from Japanese food institutes often notes that properly emulsified pork bone broth requires at least 12 hours of cooking to achieve its signature richness, and you can taste that commitment here. The noodles themselves have that springy bite that only comes from careful hydration and resting, a detail casual diners may not name but always appreciate.

Beyond ramen, the menu includes small plates like karaage and bao-style buns, which makes it easy to share or build a full meal with friends. I once came with a group of coworkers after a conference, and ordering family-style turned into an impromptu tasting session. That flexibility is part of why reviews often mention this location as ideal for both quick solo meals and relaxed group dinners. The bar program also deserves attention, especially if you enjoy Japanese whisky or a crisp lager with your noodles. Pairing fatty broth with carbonation isn’t just preference; food science studies have shown that bubbles help cut through richness and refresh the palate between bites.

Service has been consistently friendly in my experience, and that reliability matters. According to hospitality studies from Cornell University, perceived service quality plays a major role in whether guests return, sometimes even more than food alone. At this diner-style ramen shop, staff members tend to explain the menu without overdoing it, which builds trust, especially for first-timers who may feel overwhelmed by unfamiliar terms. That approach aligns with what seasoned restaurateurs recommend: guide, don’t lecture.

Location also works in its favor. Being steps from hotels, shopping, and offices means it attracts a mix of locals and visitors, which you can feel in the energy of the room. I’ve chatted with tourists who stumbled in after reading glowing reviews and with Chicagoans who treat it as a reliable go-to. While ramen can be high in sodium-public health data from the CDC often cites restaurant noodle soups as exceeding 1,500 milligrams per serving-the portions here feel balanced, and you can always customize or split dishes if that’s a concern.

One limitation worth noting is that peak hours can mean a wait, especially on weekends. That said, turnover is efficient, and watching bowls being assembled makes the time pass quickly. For anyone who values flavor, consistency, and a relaxed vibe over gimmicks, this spot delivers. The combination of thoughtful cooking methods, attentive service, and a well-chosen downtown location explains why it keeps earning strong reviews and repeat visits from people who take their ramen seriously.

  • the food was amazing, but their service has room for improvement. i showed up with a reservation, and they told us it’d be a couple minutes for our table which was fine. we waited close to 20 mins while other tables that walked in after us got sat. they basically forgot about us since a hostess had to ask us if we were waiting for a table to which we said yes and were sat right away. my friend and i each ordered a yuzu lemonade and ramen. our ramen came out fast, but they ended up forgetting to make our drinks. our server was great, she was checking in on us frequently to make sure we were doing alright. if not, we probably would’ve finished our food before even getting our drinks. overall, the ramen was good, it’s one of the better ramens that i’ve had. however, i think they need to work on their communication, especially during a busy night to ensure others don’t get the same experience as we did

  • We ordered the chicken and veg dumplings and they were amazing. Then we ordered the tantan-san and chicken ship Ramen bowls which were each amazing. We went low on the spice and it hit perfectly! Our server Alero was the key to helping us order and she is an asset to this location. Eat here!

  • Stopped in after an appointment at Northwestern and so glad I did. Food was simply delicious and service was prompt and delightful. I only ordered the vegetarian ramen since I was alone. But I will definitely be back to try other things on the menu. Bonus: check out their Spotify playlist if you’re into 90’s hip hop.

  • My family and I stopped into RAMEN SAN Deluxe and had an incredible experience. The restaurant is right in the River North / Streeterville area and the warm wood interior and lively atmosphere made it feel inviting the second we walked in. The staff was friendly, fast and genuinely attentive even though it was busy. They handled everything effortlessly and made the meal feel relaxed. The food was outstanding. I ordered the Kimchi & Fried Chicken Ramen and it was one of the best ramen dishes I’ve ever had. The broth was rich, the noodles were perfect and the crispy fried chicken plus spicy kimchi added amazing flavor and texture. My family enjoyed their dishes too, and the hot donuts at the end were the perfect finishing touch. The whole place has a great energy — everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, which made for a really nice vibe. We will definitely be back. This was one of our best dining experiences in Chicago.

  • This place is a vibe! Here’s my take: Food: I had the kimchi and fried chicken Ramen bowl. A little bit spicy, but not in an overpowering way. Very flavorful and the fried chicken was delicious. I just wish there were a couple more pieces of the fried chicken. Paired it with a glass of white wine. The pour was not that generous for a $12 glass of wine. Service: super friendly staff from the host to the bartender who served me. Food came out very timely. Atmosphere: this place has a cozy atmosphere and plays nostalgic R&B and hip-hop. The music was on point with old school stuff like SWV, Total, Nas. It’s a fun, laid back vibe.

  • This place wasn’t originally on our plans but it popped up on our Google Maps and the food looked really good. We got there, waited for about 10 minutes and we our table was ready. The lady in the front was super nice and kind. Our server delivered an excellent service too. The food was AMAZING. Unfortunately we were full and couldn’t try more things from the menu, but we would definitely love to come back and try other stuff. My favorite plate was the chicken dumplings, they were phenomenal. I would recommend this place to anyone.

  • Great place for ramen! I had the 10 hour Tonkostu and added bok choy which complimented it perfectly. My Sister had the Chicken Shio with bok choy added as well. Service was friendly and great. The music playing was cool. Would eat here again!
